"Mrs. Elizabeth Little

Mrs. Elizabeth K. Little, widow of John W. Little and resident of Memphis many years, died at 3 p.m. yesterday. She had been in ill health two years.

Mrs. Little was a member of Madison Heights Methodist Church. She leaves two daughters, Mrs. O. C. Cole, Memphis, and Mrs. Charles Dean, Collierville, Tenn., a son, Payne Little, Birmingham, Ala.

Services conducted by Dr. A.C. Dudley were to be held at 4 p.m. today at the residence 32 N. Belvedere. Burial was to be in Memorial Park with Hinton & Hutton Funeral Home in charge."

He was the son of 4. Samuel Payne and 5. Martha P. Payne. He married 3. Hannah Caroline McDougal August 12, 1851 in Greenville South Carolina.

3. Hannah Caroline McDougal, born November 28, 1827 in Greenville South Carolina; died November 14, 1903 in Memphis Tennessee. She was the daughter of 6. William Mathis McDougal and 7. Mary Lydia "Polly" Griffith.

Notes for James Samuel Payne:

James Samuel Payne was born in Greenville SC and died in Murfreesboro TN in 1865.

He ws the son of Samuel Payne and Martha Payne, a distant cousin. He married Hannah Caroline McDougal of Greenville SC, whom he met at the house of her aunt, Sallie McKinstry. They married Aug. 21,1851 in Greenville District SC.

When the Civil War broke out, James Samuel was living in Fayette AL. He moved his family to Marshall County MS, where he had a farm near Early Grove in the Woodland School Community. He enlisted in Company C, 1st Alabama Infantry and was captured toward the end of the war. He was in prison in North Carolina when he was parolled in the general parole upon Johnston's surrender at the end of the war. He returned to Mississippi to visit his family but was required to report back. On the way back he caught measles and then pneumonia. He died and was buried at Murfreesboro TN. He was a sergeant at the time of his capture and is so recorded by the Adjutant General U.S.A. in Washington.

He was a coffin maker and a farmer near Fayette Courthouse, Alabama. He owned slaves. The charcoal portrait (right) is included in the book that Uncle Robert Charles Dean compiled on his and Aunt Ruth's ancestors.

Notes for John T. Cox:

The Cox family lived in Barton, Marshall County, Mississippi. A 1936 history of the community states that the area was originally called Oak Grove because of the many stately oak trees growing there. The southern boundary of the community is formed by the Coldwater River. The two churches are Coldwater Baptist and Oak Grove Methodist.

5. Martha P. Payne, born February 21, 1810 in South Carolina; died Aft. 1850. She was the daughter of 10. William Payne and 11. Mary Huff.

Notes for Samuel Payne:

Samuel Payne and his wife Martha P. Payne were cousins, as will be shown on their ancestor charts. They were found on the Greenville District SC censuses of 1850, 1860 and 1870.... Evidently Martha died before the 1860 census, but she was shown as living on the 1850 census.

Notes for Isaiah Payne:

Isaiah Payne and his wife - name unknown- were the parents of twelve children. Child #1 was Archibald Payne who was the ancestor on one line; Child #12 was Aaron Payne - the ancestor on yet another line.

Isaiah Payne is first found in Maryland. He was in North Carolina by 1764, and in South Carolina by 1790. He died in Greenville District, S.C. in May 1818.

Notes for Alexander McDougal:

Alexander McDougal was born in Ireland of Scottish Parents. He was a preacher, and lived to be 104 years old. He had quite a reputation in Kentucky, as a man of the cloth, (preacher).

Alexander is listed on page 452 of the DAR Patriot Index, as a Lieutenant from South Carolina in the Revolutionary War.
